The artificial insemination project on October 23, 2025 involved more than just utilizing the historic imported genetics. We also used the procedure to solve a very practical management challenge with our own flock. Our seven-eighths ram, Pascal, had a massive job ahead of him with the twenty-eight Shetland ewes we brought into the program. Knowing that twenty-eight was simply too many ewes for him to breed naturally and effectively in a single season, we decided to utilize artificial insemination for him as well, using his semen on twenty of those Shetland ewes.

This addition meant our preparation phase was busier than ever. To ensure the highest possible success rate, the preparation required precise synchronization of our ewes. This involved using CIDRs, which are internal progesterone inserts that help regulate the reproductive cycle, followed by carefully timed hormone injections. This strict schedule ensured all the ewes were at the exact same, optimal stage of their cycle when the day of the procedure arrived.

The process itself is highly technical. Because sheep anatomy makes standard insemination ineffective, the procedure is performed laparoscopically by an experienced veterinarian. This involves a minimally invasive surgical technique where the semen is placed directly where it needs to go to maximize the chances of a successful pregnancy.

An undertaking this sophisticated is impossible to manage alone, and the sheer amount of logistics, animal handling, and preparation required a village. Our friends and students stepped up in a massive way, offering their time, energy, and hands-on help. From managing the pre-procedure schedules to keeping the ewes calm and moving smoothly through the stations on October 23, their support was invaluable. We simply could not have done it without them.

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to the veterinary team that guided us through this complex process. A huge thank you goes out to Beadle Lake Vet and Dr. Bain for their exceptional expertise, professionalism, and care. Knowing our flock was in such skilled hands gave us total confidence as we took this giant leap forward for our breeding program. Now, we watch the calendar and look forward to seeing the results of this hard work in the pastures.
